It was a fun night run to the top of Yankee Hill to watch the Perseid meteor shower. Though there was a full moon, we still enjoyed our time on the trail.

We did Oh-My-God Road first, then headed over to Yankee Hill. A couple wrong turns were made early on, but luckily a few people knew the trail really well and we got back on track very quickly. Even with a GPS and everything plotted in it, it was still difficult to find the right trail at times.

When we got to the Miners Gulch spur we decided to take that out to the far side and then cut up Miners Hill. It was a blast in the dark!

We went up Yankee Hill to the top, then parked around a fire pit. There was a fire ban and we wanted to watch the meteor shower, so we all had red flashlights out and there was no fire. We huddled up in blankets, sleeping bags and winter parkas to watch the show.

The moon was bright enough to read by when it wasn't behind clouds, and no one needed a flashlight to wander around. Right when we sat down a huge cloud covered us. Though we probably only saw about 10 streaks of light through the sky during the time we were there, we still had a great time.

We talked and laughed as we watched the cloud move around. There was no wind, and it was perfect. Gary's wife Betty brought home-made brownies that got gobbled up pretty quickly, and Mark made popcorn on a portable stove. We all had plenty of snacks.

The cloud finally got huge and covered everything, so we reluctantly agreed that it was time to go. We packed up (no flashlights necessary) and headed back down the hill. We took Cumberland Gulch out.

It was a great time!

Getting out on Colorado trails in May is always a gamble, especially near Central City.  The day was sunny and fairly warm for spring, and there wasn’t even a little snow on the ground at our meeting place at William C. Russell Park.  The roads were dry, and we hoped…
