Pennsylvania Gulch
We ran this trail just after completing Switzerland Trail, and it was a good time. We ran it in the rain the time before, and we were appreciating the sunshine this time. We just wished it was a longer trail, because it's the most challenging trail in the area.
It starts as a mellow climb out of the town of Sunset. It's narrow almost the entire trail, and we all wondered what we would do if we saw someone on their way down. We had a train of 15 vehicles making the climb up, and it didn't seem like we could get out of the way of anything or anyone else. Luckily, we were alone on the trail.
There are some rocky sections on the way up, and everyone enjoyed it. Monica probably enjoyed it the most, figuring out how to wheel an automatic transmission for a change. We all took lots of pictures but it was impossible to get a picture showing all of the vehicles in a line. It seemed to stretch on forever.
When we got near the end at the top of the hill we spotted a wide area with some shade that would be perfect for lunch. It was noon, so we stopped there. We all spread out in the shade and chatted and laughed for awhile. It seemed like no one wanted lunch to end, but we packed up eventually. Sometimes it seems like our wheeling trips are just an excuse to find a nice place for lunch.
Unfortunately, the trail ended soon after it started when we got to the intersection with the Sugarloaf Mountain trail. We turned left to head back to the trailhead for Sugarloaf Mountain where we had started our day. We had some new trails to find.
