We had spent a long afternoon wandering around the trail system near the Yankee Hill trail, and we wouldn't finish it until it was dark. It was a great time.

We started at Cumberland Gulch and took it north to meet up with the hill climb up to the top of Yankee Hill. Everyone enjoyed the loose rocks as we worked our way to the top. That's always such a fun hill. We parked at the top for a little while, enjoying the scenery. Marcus was with us for that short time, but he didn't finish the trail with us.

It was chilly but sunny, so our break at the top of the hill was nice. It was soon time to go, though, so we headed off to do the loop at the top. We continued around and down, and then headed east.

We took a break from the Yankee Hill trail to finish Cumberland Gulch and do Sheridan Hill and Miners Gulch. Once we finished those trails we got back on Yankee Hill.

There were quite a few people camping and settling in for the evening as we passed by them. We took our time and it was a relaxing trip out.

Gary had been hearing a thumping noise so we pulled over in a large area. He looked under his Jeep and found that his front driver-side shock mount had completely broken off and he was dragging the shock. He took the shock off and would be driving home with only three shocks. Thankfully, the trail fix was an easy one. The sun was on its way out.

We left the trail using a different way out this time, heading straight for the Columbine Campground instead of out Eureka Gulch. It seemed to go by more quickly, though we had a bit of traffic to follow on the way out.

Once we were out, we aired up in the dark. Our wheeling days used to always end up that way, in darkness. But it hasn't been that way for the past few years, it seems. It was like old times, and no one seemed to mind.

On the way out of Central City, everyone got separated and took their own way home. It was too late for dinner, anyway, and everyone wanted to head for home. It was a full day, but a great day. Happy Independence Day!

Getting out on Colorado trails in May is always a gamble, especially near Central City.  The day was sunny and fairly warm for spring, and there wasn’t even a little snow on the ground at our meeting place at William C. Russell Park.  The roads were dry, and we hoped…
