Shelf Road
Shelf Road was the first trail of the day after we walked around the annual Cripple Creek Ice Festival. We all had fun spending a short time looking at the ice sculptures. This year’s theme was “Carver's Choice.” It was a cold and snowy day -- in fact, it was the snowiest day we have had on this run for years, if not ever!
But in Cripple Creek, it was not that bad in the cold temperatures because there was no wind.
After the Ice Festival, we started down Shelf Road. The snowy trail was plowed all the way to Cañon City. It looked like in some areas there was around a foot of snow.
We did not have any issues with Shelf Road. At times, it was snowing hard and we had to slow down some. As we got close to Hole in the Rock, we were hoping that we could see it. And luckily, Hole in the Rock was not covered in snow clouds. It looked cool with the snow falling around it.
As we got close to the Shelf Road part of Shelf Road, we did run into some oncoming traffic which made things a little interesting because the road was covered in snow. But in the end, nobody had any issues with passing each other. Then it was on to the next trail of the day, Phantom Canyon.
