Shelf Road
We went to the Cripple Creek Ice Festival before running Shelf Road. We walked around the Ice Festival for an hour or so before starting the trail run. The festival runs over two weeks, and we had planned our visit on the second weekend, which usually shows more completed sculptures. Indeed, they did have quite a few ice sculptures, with a variety of themes. This year, they had split up the sculptures area from the vendors and food trucks, which provided more room for people to walk through and admire the frozen art. That made it much nicer for everyone.
It was a very nice day. The sun was out, and the temperature was nice and warming up as we were walking around Cripple Creek.
After the Ice Festival, we started down Shelf Road to Cañon City. We all thought that there was going to be a lot of snow on the trail as it had snowed frequently in the front range the few days before. But most of the snow was in the shady areas, and the sun had melted the snow away most everywhere along the trail.
We did see a few cars and a truck on Shelf Road, enjoying the day, too. As we got closer to Cañon City, Shelf Road started to get very muddy from snow melt.
We stopped near the end of Shelf Road for lunch. At that time, it was in the upper 60 degrees outside. After lunch, we drove through Cañon City eastward to get to the Phantom Canyon trail.
