The group always looks forward to our annual 4th of July BBQ in the mountains. There is still quite a bit of snow in the high country when July rolls around every year, so we find one of the few trails that is open and we head out. We've had our BBQ at the Coney Flats lake before and it was a big hit, so we were doing it again. We got an early start and found each other at the trailhead before airing down and heading in.

The guardian rocks are even better than they have been in previous years, and we had a good time on them. No one had any issues, but we got some nice photos of Jeeps before we got dirty.

After the guardian we found the trail to be pretty easy and mellow. We pulled off at the first wide area to stretch our legs and take a break, only to find a bunch of people skinny dipping in the creek. It must have been very cold, and it seemed they were trapped over there without any clothes. We didn't hang out for long, leaving them to their fun.

The poser rock is always a highlight, and each of us found our own way through the rocks and over the big one. It's always a good rock for posing and showing off flexy suspensions.

We ended up behind a slow-moving rig, so we took our time. When we came to water and mud crossings we found them a bit deeper than in past years. Everything was green, too. We figured the lake on Coney Flats was going to be pretty deep.

We only saw patches of snow here and there, way off to the sides of the trail. It wasn't long before we were at the end, and we had the place to ourselves for a minute. The mud was just as stinky as always -- we have always said it's the worst smelling mud we've ever come across.

The creek was really flowing at the bridge. There was a lot of water and it was running really fast. It made for some gorgeous scenery, and we hung out for a while just taking it all in. In the shade of the big trees, it was nice to visit and catch up. There were a few mosquitoes, but nothing too bad. Some bug spray kept them away.

We were ready for our BBQ so we turned back and headed for the Coney Flats intersection. Like always, we really enjoyed Middle St. Vrain.

Middle St. Vrain was the second trail of the day after we finished visiting the T-33A plane crash. On the way to the trailhead, we looked for Brian in the parking lot and camping areas but there was no sign of him. He was driving a couple girls home to…
