Iron Chest was the first trail of the second day. It looked like it was going to be a very nice day with a lot of sunshine. We started our way to the Rock Garden. We all were looking forward to running Iron Chest.
At the start, we did not have any issues with the rocks. But then about half way into the Rock Garden, Terry bent his stock steering link. He was in the process of climbing up a rock in the big pile of rocks, so he drove a few feet to were his Jeep was on somewhat level ground. We removed the steering link, bent it back, and then took his Hi-Lift handle and put it around the bent steering link. This all took some time but we did not see anyone else on the trail during Terry's repair.
Eventually, we were ready to move on. We had made it a few feet from Terry's repair spot when Mark got his Jeep stuck on two rocks. Both of his axles were on rocks and all four of his wheels were off of the ground. After stacking some rocks for Mark, he was able to drive off the jumbled mess.
Soon we were at the end of the Rock Garden and we were starting the switchbacks. That's when we ran into another Jeep going down the Iron Chest trail. It was easy at that spot to get around each other, so we didn't have any issues passing.
The rest of the trail was smooth and easy, and we made our way to the top in no time. The last part of the trail has an area that is somewhat washed out, but it gave us no issues. It was just a little tippy.
We walked around at the top and looked at the old mine for half of an hour or so. And then were on our way back down Iron Chest. None of us had any issues with the drive back down through the Rock Garden. Then we were on our way to the next trail, Tincup Pass.
