Ice Cave Creek Road
We had added Ice Cave Creek Road to our day's trails at the last minute, and as it was getting near lunch time we decided to explore a new spur that provided a great view of Pikes Peak. Snow from earlier in the week covered most of the trail and added an element of difficulty to an otherwise mellow trail. We made good time down the trail with all of us getting used to snow driving again. Some were opting to stay in 4-wheel drive for the added control while others opted to stay in 2-wheel drive for the fun factor.
When we reached the intersection with the spur, we turned right and proceeded through the untracked snow to the overlook. This turned out to be a great lunch spot with one of the best views of Pikes Peak available anywhere in the area. As an added bonus, the spot was sheltered from the wind and in the sunshine. We all felt like we could stay there and enjoy a nap, but we had several more trails to run before Bob could celebrate conquering 100 unique trails with the group.
We all mourned the closing of Winding Stairs Road and decided we would name the spur "Back Stairs" in tribute to the closed trail. We rejoined Ice Cave Creek Road and proceeded past the closed Winding Stairs Road. We quickly completed the rest of the trail and were once again back out to Rampart Range Road. It was a short trip from there to our next trail, Hotel Gulch.
