Hotel Gulch is an fairly mellow trail and has the benefit of being a great shortcut to other trails in the Rampart Range network of trails. Since we had just finished Ice Cave Creek Road and were headed to Missouri Gulch and Illinois Gulch, we headed down Hotel Gulch.

The trail was shaded for most of the way so the snow from earlier in the week still covered much of the trail. We made good time with no trouble and were soon at the end of the trail. While we stopped for a brief stretch of our legs at the end, Walt radioed that he couldn't shift his transmission into park or first gear. After looking at the problem, it was determined that the interlock to guard against accidentally shifting into these gears had broken. Walt determined that he could continue but it would be a pain as he couldn't downshift as he was used to.

Some of us used the time to read the historical plaques documenting the three hotels that had been built on the spot, one after the other. All three had been destroyed by fire after existing only briefly. When Walt was ready and we were done visiting we were quickly off to Missouri Gulch as Hotel Gulch ended at the intersection with that trail.
