Coney Flats
We had just finished up Middle St. Vrain and the weather was really perfect for our BBQ. It was sunny and not too hot. We headed up the technical section of Coney Flats to get to the "lake" and our lunch.
We had a big group of 13 vehicles and it took us a little bit of time to get everyone up and through the hill. The big rock that sticks out of the middle of the trail near the bottom of the hill gave almost everyone some difficulty, but no one needed a strap or any additional help.
When we got to the top of the hill everyone had a good time playing on the rocks. Ladd had an especially good time, getting nearly sideways in the obstacle and getting a little light on his front end. Everyone had a good laugh, including Ladd.
When we got to the lake we found our usual area empty of other people so we set up right away. Monica and Don claimed the poser rock this year, getting some flex during lunch.
This year we had lots of canopies and lots of people grilling. It smelled wonderful, and everyone had a smile on their face. It wasn't very long at all before people were walking around with hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks and other things for lunch. We all chatted and enjoyed the shade under the canopies.
As usual, we cooked way too much food. We stopped a few people on their way by, practically forcing them to get something to eat. It made a great way to meet new people.
Jed and Eric even had time to catch and release a few small fish. The wooden path around the lake always had a few people on it, enjoying the scenery and fishing.
No one really wanted to leave, and we sat around for quite awhile. The weather was just too nice. Eventually, though, it was time to leave. We packed everything up and headed for the lake.
A few in the group had already been running back and forth through it, enjoying the deep water. Now it was everyone's turn. There were some small splashes at first, but as time went on the splashes got bigger and bigger. Bill probably went through the lake the highest number of times, and Mike probably went through it the fastest. The biggest splash, though, went to Eric. He got a lot of water in the air.
We all met on the other side of the lake, laughing. Probably half of us had clothes that were at least partially wet from the splashing. We didn't really want to leave, but it was time to go.
We headed down the trail and it was pretty uneventful. There were the usual muddy puddles, but no one splashed through them. They're always pretty smelly on that trail. There was even some standing water in places off to the side of the trail that didn't usually have water in them. Everything was nice and green.
When we got to the end of the trail we were happy to see that Beaver Reservoir was completely full of water. It was gorgeous. We headed out and parked on the side of the road. Some people were going home at this point, and they were airing up. The rest of the group was off to run a couple more trails while we still had sunshine.
This was probably the best barbeque yet! They keep getting better each year, and the nice weather really made it a great one.
