Shelf Road
We were starting our day with Shelf Road and it looked like it was going to be a great day. The sun was out, there was snow on the ground, and it was a warm day for a February. Everybody was excited to get out of the house!
We met up in Cripple Creek. The Cripple Creek Ice Festival was canceled this year, again. So, we just went to the start of Shelf Road after a short time talking and looking at Roger’s new 4XE Jeep (the electric Jeep). We even had a new member with an FJ, Brody.
The start of Shelf Road was plowed and easy going. As we got closer to the shelf part of Shelf Road, it was not plowed and had a few inches of snow on the road. That made things more fun.
The closer we got closer to Cañon City, the warmer it got with more and more wet snow and lots of mud in places.
At the end of Shelf Road we stopped for lunch, and then went up to “The Banks” campground to see if the gate was open to the other trails up in the hills. There were quite a lot of campers at the campground having a good time! Unfortunately, the gate was closed at the far end of the campground, so we turned around and went to Phantom Canyon Road for our second and last trail of the day.
