Apex Road
It's a road more than a trail, but we use it a lot and it needed to be on the website. It's a great way to see the area in nearly any type of passenger car. You can leave right from Central City and immediately get up into the mountains, which is always nice.
We came off of Pickle Gulch and decided to add Apex Road to the website at the last minute. It was raining, but the dirt road still wasn't at all challenging. We headed down to Highway 119, turned around, and headed back in.
It was lunch time, and Julie remembered that William C. Russel Park had covered picnic tables. We made the turn and went over to the park, and found dry tables waiting for us. We had a nice lunch there out of the rain, which was unexpected as we figured we'd be eating lunch in our Jeeps. Perfect!
We headed back up the hill and hoped to find some trails we saw on the Motor Vehicle Use Map, but the spurs were all marked Private. It was weird not to find any of them. We took the connector to Kingston Peak and also found those spurs closed to the public. At least we had a good view up there, and we enjoyed that before headed over to do Kingston Peak.
