Yellow Cat Flat
The day started out with the drive out to Moab that turned into an unexpected trail run later in the day.
Matt just got to the KOA Campground and was setting up camp for the next few days. About halfway through camp set up, Matt's phone rang. It was Julie asking if he was in Moab. He said yes and Julie continued to explain that she had gone exploring on Yellow Cat Flat on her way to Moab and got stuck in the mud while trying to cross a muddy creek crossing. She needed help getting unstuck.
Matt contacted Brian and Alan and told them that Julie was stuck, and they decided to go and help Julie out of the mud! They backtracked north and then back east on I-70 for a little over an hour to get to the area where Julie was stuck. They all aired down for the trail to make the ride better. Soon, the group found Julie sitting on the side of the trail near her Jeep.
Matt drove closer to her Jeep and noticed that half of his own tire was sinking deep into the mud, because the ground was so soft and water saturated. Matt was able to drive backwards without needing help.
Matt found a place that was not so soft and muddy to cross the creek. Then, he was able to winch Julie's Jeep out the same way she got stuck in the mud, only in reverse. There was no way to pull her out forward.
After getting everyone on the same side of the creek, we finished Yellow Cat Flat and headed back to Moab. The rest of Yellow Cat Flat was an easy trail and nobody had any issues, but for a few wrong turns. At the end of Yellow Cat Flat, we aired back up for the drive back to Moab just before an evening storm moved in. It was looking like it would be an interesting trip to Utah.
