Webster Pass
It was only September but there was so much snow on the trail that we couldn't make it over the pass. We wanted to run Red Cone but there was just too much snow. We made it to the base of the Webster Pass switchbacks where we had lunch in about six inches of snow as our scouting party tried to get a little further. It was just too snowy, but we still had a blast playing in the first snow of the season.
There were 17 vehicles but on this trail that really isn't too many. It made for a great group of people all day, with lots of visiting. We aired down and we could see the mountains in front of us pretty covered with snow so our plan to run Red Cone was already looking like it might not happen.
When we got to the trailhead there was already mud and an inch or so of snow, so we decided at that point that we would try Webster Pass instead. We started up the trail and it wasn't long before we were in much more snow.
Everyone did really well and no one had any issues on the way up. Even the bridge didn't give us any trouble. When we got to the large area at the base of Red Cone and before the switchbacks leading up to Webster Pass we stopped for lunch. It was sunny and not very cold so everything was getting a little slushy, making it even more difficult. Quite a few people stopped and couldn't get going again, ending up momentarily stuck.
Rather than take our whole group up the switchbacks where it is extremely difficult to turn around, a scouting party went up instead. Bob, Gary and Ed slowly and carefully made their way up, but didn't get too far before a drift was crossing the trail. Bob tried to drive over it but ended up sliding dangerously close to the edge. He worked his way safely off of it but that was it for our scouting party. They slowly backed down the trail.
While they were scouting the rest of us were playing in the snow. It was fun to just drive around in, so we all took turns cruising around what used to be a campfire.
When our group was together again we made our way down the trail. We still had lots of daylight left so we decided to air up a little and run over to Slaughterhouse Gulch (which didn't have any snow on it, surprisingly). Even though we didn't make it through it was still a great time!
