Webster Pass
We picked a great day for running some trails in the mountains. We had a very nice and warm day with a lot of sun.
Webster Pass was the first trail for the day. We all met at a gas station not too far from the trailhead. After the short drive to the dirt road leading the trail head for Webster Pass, we aired down off to the side of the road to make the drive smoother. The traffic was not that busy at the time.
It was just minutes after we started on the Webster Pass trail that a Jeep recovery vehicle pulled up behind us and asked if we could let him pass. He was in a hurry as he passed us. We later found out that he had helped two people on the Red Cone trail that had two flat tires each and a third person in a Four Runner who had slid halfway off Radical Hill. The recovery team recovered all three vehicles from both trails. From the top of Webster Pass we were able to see the recoveries in progress.
Webster Pass is an easy trail, and we did not see many other people. We ran into a forest service officer on a dirt bike. We think he was on fire patrol checking on people camping.
Just before the tree line, we stopped for lunch in a treed area for the shade. The camping spot for lunch had a river with small waterfalls next to it.
After lunch we started the shelf road drive up Webster Pass. About halfway up the shelf road section, we ran into a Toyota making his way down. He backed up a short distance near a switch back so we all could pass. The rest of the way to the top of Webster Pass had no other traffic going downhill.
At the top of Webster Pass was a big crowd of people and a lot more coming down Red Cone. So, we took a few pictures, but we did not stay too long. We could see the vehicle recovery on Radical Hill. From the far distance it looked more like a standoff between who was going to be the one to back up on the shelf road!
We slowly made our way to Montezuma side of Webster Pass, which for the most part was also a nice and easy drive. We came up to a creek crossing near a camping area. Julie went through the creek fast. Then Calvin drove through somewhat fast, as well, and at the other side of the creek his Jeep just stopped running. He tried starting the Jeep a few times and it would not start. After 45 minutes or so we were going start setting up a Jeep recovery and he tried one more time to start the Jeep and it did start. After that he did not have any more issues starting his Jeep, and we were glad all was good!
After that, we drove to the end of Webster Pass. We went to the next trail, Peru Creek, to continue our fun day on the trails.
