Slaughterhouse Gulch
Slaughterhouse Gulch was our only trail of the day, so we started the trail run a little later than usual. We met up at a gas station before going to trailhead for Slaughterhouse Gulch. The forecast called for a rainy day, and it looked like the forecasters were correct. But the rain held off for most of the day, and it only rained for a few minutes while we were on the trail.
Matt's son, Corrigan, grew up on the trails with us. Now he was a new Member, driving his Jeep Camanche on the trails. Time flies.
Alan brought a second vehicle to run on the trails, a 1975 Gold Jeep CJ-5. It was cool to see this rig on the rocks.
After gassing up, we went to the parking lot at the start of Slaughterhouse Gulch to air down for the trail. In the parking lot, Calvin ran into a few friends. They talked for a few minutes, then we started driving down the trail.
At the first small obstacle, we all went to the right side of the trail. It was easy, just a small, rocky hill climb. When we got to the "Y" in Slaughterhouse Gulch, we went to the right to run the trail clockwise. That's when Calvin's friends were coming up behind us in their Jeeps, so we let them pass us.
Most of Slaughterhouse Gulch was easy going with a few rocks and hills to go up and down. The bottom of Slaughterhouse Gulch was dry with one small hill climb that we all went up. We were all just having fun. In pull-out area we ran into Calvin's friends again where they had stopped for lunch. So, we stopped, too, and hung out with them for lunch. We all had a good time telling war stories. After lunch, Calvin's friend went on to finish Slaughterhouse Gulch and we stayed a bit back to give the two groups some room from each other.
A while after leaving the lunch stop area, we were at the big hill climb. We all went to the left line up the big hill as it looked like that was the fun way to go up. At the top of the hill, the trail was washed out and it made fun to flex out the Jeeps' suspensions. We were here when it rained for a short time as we were driving up the hill. Near the "Y" at the end of the loop, we ran into a few groups going in the opposite direction, but it was in an area where it was easy to pass each other.
After the "Y" we came upon a car with a flat tire. So, we stopped and helped to jack the car off the ground. The spare tire would not go back on the car, because the driver bent the strut by going too fast on the trail. He started to hit the strut to bend it back so the tire would go back on, and it worked for him. He will need a new strut, but he could drive off the trail.
We aired back up in the parking lot. We all had a great time on the trail.
