Shelf Road
We started on the Shelf Road trail from the south and went north to Cripple Creek. The first part of the trail was paved and then soon it went to a dirt road. We found snow covering everything along the way.
Soon after the trail turned to a dirt road we found ourselves on a shelf road for quite awhile. We drove alongside a rock wall with the passenger side being the "scary side" with the big drop-off. However, there were beautiful views into and across the deep and wide canyon. The road had a few inches of snow on it, but none of us had any issues with the snow as we went on to run the trail. It stopped snowing for most of the drive on the shelf road.
When we got to the switchbacks north of the shelf road, we all had to go into 4-wheel drive to get up the small hills on the road. The rest of the trail was just fun driving in the snow. We did not get to see the Window Rock because it was foggy with a light snow falling. When we got to the end of the trail it started to snow more and it snow for the rest of the drive home.
It was a cold day but we all had a great time, and we welcomed two new members. Everything really looks different in the snow, and it was a nice way to see the scenic loop.
