Sevenmile Rim
We met up with Roger's son, Brad, the night before. He normally drives a 1979 CJ-7 when he's at home in Texas, but for Moab he rented a 4-cylinder, stock, X-package TJ with well-worn 30-inch street tires. We were a little concerned about the Jeep (but not the driver) being able to make it over the trails we had selected, but the combination of Jeep and driver proved to be more than up to the task. Over the next three days we would all shake our heads and laugh at what Brad was able to do with that Jeep. We were lucky he did so well, too, because there wasn't a tow hook on either end of that Jeep.
Thursday turned out to be the best day of the whole trip and we enjoyed it. Brad enjoyed parking close to the rim for a photo opportunity. We all took the side trip down to Uranium Arch. We quickly got to the miniature Golden Crack and Mike again got a chance to flex out his Old Man Emu suspension. We met no other traffic of any kind and briefly stopped at the burnt toast rock for another photo opportunity.
Knowing we were close to Wipe Out Hill, we pressed on. We were soon at the top and stopped to scope it out. Mike had been down and up it before, so he quickly set up to run it again. Mike went down the hill with no problems. He turned around and went right back up again with no problems. By then, a group of bikes and ATVs had shown up, and they voiced their appreciation of the show. None of them opted to try the hill, however. Roger and Brad decided that the obstacle was not for them, although they would tackle ones later that were more difficult.
We stopped for lunch at Determination Towers. We had enjoyed the trail to ourselves until then, but another group of ATVs and bikes decided that they'd lunch next to us. We didn't stay long. Besides, we were looking forward to running Metal Masher after Sevenmile Rim.
We left Determination Towers and almost immediately stopped to confirm the route. While we were working it out, Dan Mick drove up and introduced himself. It was good to meet him after having heard so much about him. We confirmed we were headed the right way to Tusher Wash and then moved on. We were soon back out to the highway and on to Metal Masher.
