Schubarth Road
We met at the Balanced Rock parking area inside the Garden of the Gods after waiting 30 to 40 minutes to get into the park. They were having a 10K run that we weren't aware of. When we were working on getting there the sun was out, but the clouds were starting to move in. It didn't start raining on us until later in the day.
We ran the first half of Rampart Range Road to get to the Schubarth Road trailhead. Schubarth Road is one of the longer trails in the Rampart Range area and we were looking forward to it.
Most of the trail is fairly easy with some tight groups of boulders and trees that the trail weaves around. We started with the right-most section of the trail. We had to go through some mud on the trail, but it wasn't too deep. It had been raining a few days a week for the past few weeks, so we were expecting puddles. It was nice that there was no dust from driving on the roads, since it had rained the night before.
We stopped at the fence at the east end of the Schubarth Road trail to hike and have lunch. We all hiked down to the rock overlooking the town of Monument to the north and Colorado Springs to the south.
Then we went back out the way we came in to get to the second half of the trail. That half of the trail is very tight in places and ends at a overlook of Monument and the U.S. Air Force Academy. It was the end of the trail for us. On the way back, Steve played around on one of the rocks on the trail and got his left front tire off the ground. Otherwise, it was a mellow trip. We got back onto Rampart Range Road and worked our way over to Mount Herman Road.
