Poison Spider Mesa
We were really looking forward to running this trail, along with Golden Spike and Gold Bar Rim. We had heard so much about these trails, and were somewhat intimidated by their reputation. After our warm up trip on Top of the World the day before, we were ready to hit it.
We got an early start, as usual for us, leaving the hotel by 7:00 AM and hitting the trailhead by 7:30 AM. The weather was bright and sunny, if a little cool that early, but the promise was for a day full of sun and the mid-60s. There was no one at the trail head, which was not surprising considering the early hour on a mid-week day and given the few 4x4 vehicles to be seen in town. After airing down, we hit the trail. The early obstacles were just a teaser for what was to come, and the low sun made for great shadows beside us as we headed up the trail. We soon stopped to remove the doors and drop the top or open the sun rider top to take advantage of the day.
The waterfall was fun, but no real challenge as we took the S-shaped line up it. The Wedgy was also fun. We stopped to pay our respects to Mary Jane Francis. There must be something special about the gravesite because it was obvious from the tracks in the sand that she had a lot of four-legged visitors!
Before we knew it we were at the start of Golden Spike. We briefly considered completing Poison Spider and returning to Golden Spike, but we wanted to be sure we weren't taking on more than we could complete before dark. We opted to leave the rest of Poison Spider for another day.
