Phantom Canyon
Phantom Canyon was the second trail of the day. It started snowing and remained very cold as we got closer to starting the trail that goes north back to Cripple Creek.
We stopped to take some pictures at the old trail tunnel. It's always fun driving through the old railroad tunnels along Phantom Canyon.
We were near the curved, steel bridge when Roger said he had to stop. He thought that his Jeep broke its V-Belt. When he opened the hood he saw that the V-Belt was still intact, but one of the pulleys had failed for the V-Belt.
Roger and Alan drove back to Cañon City to try to find a short belt or pulley in a parts store. The parts store did not have a short belt, but it did have a pulley that was a little bigger. So, they came back with that pulley.
The new pulley was too big, unfortunately. So, Alan towed Roger's Jeep down to Highway 50 where a tow truck was going to pick up and tow Roger's Jeep back home.
The rest of us never drove back to Cripple Creek the rest of the way on Phantom Canyon Road. Even with Roger's Jeep breaking down, we all enjoyed getting out on the trail for the day.
