Mount Herman Road
Mount Herman was our first trail run of the new year. We met up in Monument and drove down to a small parking area just before the trailhead for Mount Herman Road. It was cold out, and it stayed that way all day.
After airing down, we all started the way up Mount Herman Road. At first, the trail just had some icy and snow packed patches, mostly in the shady areas. As we made it to higher altitude, the road became more and more snow packed. None of us had any issues with the road conditions.
We stopped and played around some in the play area. Matt and Tim climbed up a rock slab that was covered in snow. Tim's Jeep's spare tire made some interesting tire "tracks" in the snow due to the steep angle of the rock slab to climb.
As we got near the top of Mount Herman Road, we ran into a few signs saying, "Logging Operations Ahead" and "Fire Activity Ahead." We could see all of the logging that was going on. Most of the forest trees were cut down and only a very few trees were still remaining. Sadly, it did not look like a forest anymore, but there are now nice views of Pikes Peak.
When we got to the end of Mount Herman Road, we turned onto Schubarth Road and started driving the second trail of the day.
