We came off of Mammoth Gulch and the weather was gorgeous. We had planned on seeing the Moffat Tunnel before we headed off to dinner, so we turned to go to the end of the road. There was a freight train parked on the tracks, and lots of people at intersections waiting for a train. Did we time this well?

We parked in the lot near the tunnel and aired up our tires. We even found a group of Jeeps there that we'd seen off and on throughout the day. They were there before us, so they soon left. We noticed many other people hanging out and staring at the tunnel. A train must be coming!

We stood by the tracks for only a short time when we heard the train and then saw it pop out of the tunnel. Everyone on the passenger Amtrak waved at us and we waved back. Why is it tradition to wave at trains? It was a pretty cool sight.

We got in our vehicles and headed back, and we crossed the train tracks just before the freight train was headed to the tunnel. So we even got a great view of that. It's like we had planned everything perfectly, even though it was all just a lucky break.

We headed to the trailhead and stopped at the informational area to read signs and hang out by the creek. The weather was still so perfect, and it wasn't even very late. We hung out for a bit, and then headed for the pavement.

Everyone went to the Wondervu Cafe for dinner, which was nice. We sat on the patio for a while but then it rained, so we grabbed our food and ran indoors. The rain wasn't anything crazy, and dinner was a great time. It was the perfect end to a scenic and fun day.

We knew that Jenny Creek had been rerouted out of the water in 2014, so we planned on checking it out and updating the site this year. We waited for the big snow drift to melt and then headed up to see it for ourselves. That meant a trip along…
