Lead King Basin
We remembered Lead King Basin as the tougher of the two trails when compared to Crystal City. We found out we were wrong, though. Yes, it's steeper and possibly more dangerous, but it was dry, smooth, and easy for us. It actually ended up being the quicker trail.
We came from the trailhead and it immediately started climbing. The climb was steep in places but it was easy in 4-low. There were flowers everywhere and we really enjoyed the scenery.
The top section is mellow and enjoyable, even when the trail was narrow. There were a few spots we couldn't have passed another vehicle, but we didn't see anyone so we were fine. We saw a few cars and hikers at the hiking trailhead parking area, but that was it.
We went down the first of the two sections of switchbacks and we were making good progress. We stopped at a big campsite for a little break before we were in complete shade in the canyon. Ben's wiper washer fluid wasn't coming out, so we had a trail fix to do. Exciting!
We finally headed down the last switchbacks and into the basin. Everything went smoothly, and it was really pretty. It seemed like no time at all had passed and we were suddenly at the end of the trail to intersect with Schofield Pass again. We were happy we got to see everything we planned on for the day, even with the drive from Denver. It couldn't have gone any better. It promised to be a great weekend!
