Kingston Peak
The weather looked good when we started up Kingston Peak, but we all knew that it was always windy and chilly up on that trail. Almost everyone put up tops and put in windows at some point early in the trail, so we were ready to go. We left the busy Mammoth Gulch trail behind and headed up.
We met a couple of other vehicles on their way down, and they were covered with drying muddy water. It looked like we were going to find water in the mud puddles, and it looked like it wasn't very thick or gloopy at all. We quickly found ourselves at the puddles, and they looked pretty harmless. Mike wasn't going to get himself all muddy, so he volunteered to take pictures of everyone.
Almost everyone had a muddy good time, splashing through the puddles. Brian made his kids laugh like crazy going through. Almost all of us ended up with vehicles in a nice shade of tan by the time we were finished.
It kept getting chillier and windier as we climbed up to the overlook. No one was up for getting out and looking over the side, so we kept going. The climb up to the top was fun, as always, and we didn't meet anyone on their way down (which is always a bonus).
We were working our way across the tundra when two hikers crossed our path. They were headed across the tundra, perpendicular to the trail. They also had skis on their backs, so they were definitely having an adventure.
Climbing up the second hill isn't as fun as it used to be now that the options are gone, but it was still fun. It seemed like it didn't take long at all to get to the rock house. Almost everyone got out to brave the crazy winds and put a rock on the house. We checked out the views of Loch Lomond and discussed possibly doing that trail when we were done, but in the end we decided that we were finished for the day.
Quite a few of us ended up in Idaho Springs for dinner and airing up. It was a great day, and we were all smiles.
