Hell’s Revenge
Saturday turned out to be another day of threatening rain, so we did Hell's Revenge instead of Lockhart Basin and Chicken Corners so we could stay on slickrock. We hit Hell's Revenge early in the morning and we were well ahead of any others that were on the trail that day.
We went down to the overlook and Hell's Gate, but opted not to run it in the rain. We continued on to the Bath Tub, having fun on the many ups and downs on the way. We all went through the Bathtub several times as there was no one else around and we weren't feeling rushed. We looked at the Car Wash and Mickey's Hot Tub and wisely decided they weren't for us.
We went on by the Escalator, too, and Mike said he's never going to try that obstacle. When we got to the Tip-Over Challenge we also decided to bypass it. We all agreed that we don't like the tippy stuff. Once again, we took a wrong turn after the Tip-Over Challenge, this time taking a middle route out to the overlook above Moab and missing Rubble Trouble. We had lunch at the overlook, enjoying the break from the rain but watching thunderstorms blot out other areas as they moved through.
After lunch we opted to backtrack and go out Hell's Revenge backwards to avoid the tedious portion from the overlook back to Sand Flats Road. This was really enjoyable as we got to see the obstacles in reverse. We also took a side trip that went north from the overlook above Rubble Trouble. It ended at a dead end near the Colorado River. Going out the trail in reverse, we also got to see a lot more people as there was quite a crowd at the Bath Tub. Even though there were several nicely built buggies, no one was trying the Car Wash or Mickey's Hot Tub.
Hell's Revenge remains one of our favorite trails in Moab, though sometime we'd like to see people trying Escalator (the three of us never have). Brad had to turn the Jeep in, so we headed into Moab. After washing the Jeep, he brought it into the rental agency. The clerk on duty gave it a thorough inspection top to bottom saying the boss told her to because he knew we were going to run some difficult trails with it. In spite of where it had been, there was no damage.
