Balanced Rock Road
After we got off of Mount Herman Road it wasn't long before we were at Balanced Rock Road. The weather continued to be clear but cool. We turned down onto the trail and we were having fun in two-wheel drive in the snow for the first part of the trail. There was a burned-out trailer at the first clearng. After passing by that junk, the snow got deeper.
The trail led us downhill and we all had fun playing in the deep snow that we had been looking for since our start in the morning. We could see Pikes Peak through some trees here and there, giving us some nice views. The sun was still out and the temperature was not that cold as it hovered around 30 degrees.
We made it to the bottom and turned around to head back to the trailhead at the top of the big hill. Most of us didn't have any issues with the climb, but Tim wasn't so lucky. In order to make the first hill climb, Tim had to back up and get a running start to make it over the big hump. It was fun to see him go up at a fast speed with the snow flying all around him.
When we got to the next climb, Tim could not make it up again so he tried the "back up and try again at full speed" approach. The trail had a lot of snow on it, and he ended up in a big snow drift. Terry tried to pull him out, but it did not work because he didn't have enough traction, either. So Terry had to use his winch for the first time since buying it a year and a half ago, and he winched both vehicles up the hill.
For the rest of the trip back up the hill no one had any problems. It wasn't long before we were on our way to Ice Cave Creek Road.
