Argentine Pass
We had a large group of people and Jeeps as we drove through Georgetown and then up to the Argentine Pass trailhead. At the trailhead, a vehicle was parked blocking the trail so the trail was challenging at the start. Once we were all around the vehicle we stopped to air down and disconnect. After we were finished getting ready and we started up, a pickup truck loaded with wood was behind us.
We started up the trail and the weather was absolutely fantastic. The skies were blue and it was sunny, though it was a bit windy. We worked our way up to the turnoff for the lower road up to Waldorf and stayed left at the switchback. The trail was very mellow, scenic and everyone enjoyed it. After a couple of stops for pictures and leg stretching, we made our way up to the main trail, crossed it, and headed up the more difficult trail to break the mellowness up with some fun.
Before long, we were at the old Waldorf town site and had lunch. The weather was holding and the wind had even died down, so lunch was quite enjoyable. However, once the wind started up again we hastily packed up and took our turns climbing up the mine tailing pile heading up to Argentine Pass.
At the beginning the trail seemed quite mellow, but as we worked our way up we ran into some icy patches where ice was all across the trail. Some of us managed to slip on the ice a bit, but we all managed to get through it. As we climbed, we ran through some light snow patches on the trail. After the second set of large switchbacks, the patches changed to deeper snow. The snow had drifted across the trail, and after several attempts we determined it was too deep to make it through. Fortunately, we were not on a shelf road and we all managed to get turned around and headed back to the Waldorf town site and McClellan Mountain.
