Pickle Gulch
We planned on camping for the entire weekend, but things came up and everyone canceled. When we got to the meeting place in Black Hawk, we all agreed that it was a lucky break. It was chilly and raining, and camping wouldn't have been as much fun as it usually is. We visited for a little while and then headed off to Pickle Gulch.
The rain made the trail even better, because the rocks were slick. Hills that were normally just bouncy fun were a bit more work, and it was a blast. Everyone was enjoying the trail from the start, so we ended up with a good day right away.
We didn't get out until we were at the mine, and we hung out there for a little while in the drizzling rain. We planned on coming back to this spot but at the bottom of the hill, so most of us decided not to do the hill just yet. Unfortunately, we didn't end up coming back to that spot, so some of us missed our chance.
There were more slick and fun hills, and then we came to a wide meadow where we could park and chit chat. It was still raining, though, so we didn't chat for long.
We were almost done, and we decided to take the tight spur to go play a little on the steep hill. We found a forest service Jeep out there, and we got to see how carsonite signs are installed. It was pretty cool. The identifying signs weren't on the stake yet, so we're not sure what they're going to put on it. We hoped they weren't closing the spur.
We got to the end and realized that though we'd done Apex Road many times in bits and pieces, it wasn't on the website. We wanted to correct that, so we headed into town to map out the trail.
