Saran Wrap
We hadn't run Saran Wrap or Eagle Rock since 2004 so we were excited to go back and try them again. That meant we had a big group and there were some long waiting times at each obstacle, but it was a gorgeous day and we had a fantastic time.
We aired down and disconnected while we were still on pavement, then we headed up the long dirt road to get to the trailhead. We stopped at the pond at Eagle Rock to take off doors and windows, and we were surprised to find the small pond that used to be off to the side was now a big pond that you had to cross through.
We went around the corner and started Saran Wrap. It gets fun early, and it wasn't long before we were working our way up rocky hills. The first big hill was a blast, and everyone had a good time finding their own lines through it.
We soon found ourselves at the crossroads and almost everyone chose the Low Road and the rocky obstacles there. Monica went through first and after playing on a big rock she managed to have a fight with a smaller rock that just wouldn't cooperate. She eventually managed to get over and around it, and was soon up to the big rocks at the top. The new, bigger tires, lockers and gears really made a difference and this time she didn't have to work at it at all (unlike her last trip there).
Dave came up next and got some great flex on the rocks. He roared right through the top part like it was nothing, really enjoying his new 33" tires.
Jed also had new 33" tires and he didn't have any troubles either. He had some great flex earlier on the big hill, and the Low Road was no exception. He twisted his way right through it without any issues.
Bill didn't have any issues all the way to the top, then found a line he liked that snaked through the big rocks at the top. It looked like he walked right through it, but unfortunately he hit his rear, passenger side fender flare on the rock in the side of the trail and scraped it up. What a great way to start as a new member!
JJ was the first one through with a longer wheelbase and it was hard to tell if it was easier or more difficult compared to the shorter TJs that had gone through before him. His Rubicon Unlimited made easy work of the obstacle, but it was more difficult to get through the tight spaces. He got through it easily, though, twisting his suspension through the big rocks with a grin on his face.
On any other day, Roger would have a white Rubicon Unlimited, but this time he brought his CJ-7 with him. He looked good cruising through the big rocks without any troubles at all. When he got to the top he didn't bother weaving around through them, choosing to drive over the tops instead.
Cheryl was next in her Rubicon Unlimited, and was the first one to successfully stay up on the slippery hill near the middle of the Low Road. It slants and is covered with loose dirt, and everyone else who tried it simply slid down the side instead. She walked right over the high side without any issues. She got to the top and drove over the big rock with a little room to spare.
Don followed and tried to take the high side of the slippery rock near the middle but in his shorter wheelbase TJ it wasn't working out too well. He went through the middle of it, then flexed all around the big rocks at the top. He made it look easy.
Bob S. was determined to match Cheryl's line on the slippery rock and with a lot of gas pedal he managed to power through it and not slide down. With that accomplished, he walked right over the big rocks and exited the Low Road like it was a pile of pebbles.
Micheal was next in his Cherokee (XJ) and unfortunately his lockers weren't working. He had been having some issues with them on our last trip and he thought they were fixed, but they still weren't working. He didn't end up needing them anyway, walking right through all of the boulders on his way to the top. Climbing over the biggest boulders, he showed us what a Cherokee can do.
Bob R. just drove right through the Low Road rocks like he always does -- like he's on a dirt road and nothing gives him any troubles. He barely slowed down when he got to the top, driving around and through the big rocks like they were nothing.
Gary brought up the rear of the group and caved in to a lot of peer pressure when he tried the line found by Cheryl and Bob S. The large group of spotters cheered him on, but there's a big difference between his CJ-7 and the other, larger vehicles. After a couple of sideways slides he'd had enough and he came up the middle. The smaller vehicle just wound its way through the big rocks at the top without any troubles at all.
Steve brought his Blazer up the High Road and was already there at the top, waiting. We had lunch where the two roads come together because there is enough room to pull off and let others go by. At the end of our lunch a few vehicles came up behind us and stopped, and we turned around then to go back down. There really aren't any other obstacles past this point, so we headed back to do Eagle Rock.
Monica, Micheal and Gary all hit the big rock at the top of the Low Road on the way down. Monica folded in and scraped up her fender flare on the driver's side, Micheal hit his side view mirror and cracked it, and Gary scraped up his fender and paint on his driver's side. It's tough to avoid that rock!
When we got to the bottom, we naturally played on the huge hill right next to the entrance to Eagle Rock. We made a big circle and we were all back around in time to watch Steve wrestle with the hill. It's definitely a difficult hill if you don't have a lot of flex in your suspension, because the whoopdeedoos are pretty big. He powered through it, though, and made it to cheers from everyone below, including some strangers who stopped to watch.
We started up Eagle Rock, but then Cheryl's transfer case stopped cooperating. Bob S. found the issue and fixed it, and she was once again able to get into four wheel drive. We were off to our second trail of the day after enjoying another great time on Saran Wrap.
