Wheeler Lake
We meet at a gas station in Fairplay, and it looked like it was going to be a very nice day. We aired down at the start of the Wheeler Lake trail and then we headed in.
We stopped at Magnolia Mill and took some pictures of the old mill building and the waterfall next to the mill.
The first small hill climb next to Magnolia Mill was fun, but none of us had any issues with the small obstacle. Some of us had to try a few times but all of us made it up the hill.
Next was the Flopper obstacle. Matt and Jason both went to the right side of Flopper. Jason ended up completing a very nice wheel stand. Bill and Brian went up the far left side. Both got very close to the rocks enclosing the trail like walls but did not actually touch the walls.
The second obstacle was the V. Matt and Jason both went up the V. Matt did get one wheel off the ground. Jason slid into the side of the wall in the V and got stuck. It took two Jeeps to winch him out of the V. We set one winch line to the front and a second winch line to the back. We got him out of the V with no damage and had fun with it! We also had some help from a person from Oregon. He stayed with us until we reached Wheeler Lake. Brian and Bill took the center line up the V.
The rest of the trail was pretty easy going. The small pond was filled with water this year, but the water was not too deep.
The last obstacle, Bowling Ball Hill, was fun with some good climbs and washed out spots on the way up. None of us had any issues with Bowling Ball Hill.
Soon we made it to Wheeler Lake. We stopped for lunch and walked around. Matt and Corrigan hiked up the hill to the entrance of the old mine. They took some pictures and then went back down to the parking area.
On they way down Bowling Ball Hill, we ran into a few people making their way up the hill and it was difficult passing. Seems like they hadn’t read the signs about communicating on the radio.
A big group of vehicles had stopped at the bottom of Bowling Ball Hill. That group had CB radios, so they heard us on channel 22 saying that we were coming down.
We ran into a few more groups as we made our way back to the start of Wheeler Lake, but passing them wasn't as difficult.
We all had a great time on the trail. We aired up in a parking area and then went home. It's such a great trail.
