This had to be the first time we went to a trail with some regret. We knew that Twin Cone had drastically changed since we saw it, with a permanent closure in the middle before the obstacles and the big view at the top. We've lost some favorite trails over the years, but Twin Cone had to be the biggest loss for us. We had to see it for ourselves, so we headed out to run it at the start of our day.

We aired down at the parking area near the trailhead, though we didn't really need to until later in the day. The weather was nice, and we headed in.

The first change we found was that the creek crossing that was wide, clear, and a few inches deep in previous years was now largely filled with smooth river rocks. It slowed you down, but the water was effectively gone.

The rest of the trail didn't look any different, and we saw the first yellow aspen leaves of the season. There were people camping in the overlook when we went by, so we skipped it. Matt had been hearing a grinding noise, and he finally figured out what it was. His brake caliper was just hanging there, and the bolts were gone. He pulled it off and put a rock in the middle of it so it would have something to grab on to, and he headed down to find a fix. The rest of us kept going the short distance to the end.

On the way back, we found that the campers had packed up so we had a chance to stop. We climbed out on the rocks and enjoyed the only scenery we'd find.

We headed back to the trailhead and out. It was still a bummer, to lose one of our favorite trails. Would we be back? Probably not.

We met up with some new friends and ran this trail fairly quickly. It’s pretty short and fast to run and you have to come back out the way you went in. The views were amazing! It was pretty cool to see Highway 285 from up there and really see…
