Slaughterhouse Gulch
We had a fantastic season opener for 2004, with a lot of new members and a few members from last year. There were 13 vehicles total on the run, making a big group. There were quite a few photo opportunities too, and the gorgeous weather made for some great pictures.
We had to stop at Pucker Rock, of course, where a lot of people posed for the first pictures of the day. Almost everyone had a little scare when their back tire came off the ground, though it was Ken who came closest to tipping over. That's a good way to start your day!
We went on to Stump Hill, and everyone made it up -- no one had to take the bypass. Praveen wheeled his 4Runner to the top and made it look easy. Wendy had some fun in her YJ trying to find a good line but in the end she made it to the top.
We all took our time going down the big hill to the bottom. We didn't see any snow on the trail worth mentioning, though there was a little snow in shady patches off to the side of the trail. When we got to the bottom we stopped for a quick lunch break, then it was off to the big uphill.
Everyone played in the whoopdeedoos on the way up the hill, and nearly everyone dropped a tire in a big hole to get flexy. We got some great shots here, and Mike had an impressive wheel stand too.
We worked our way to the top, then it was off to the mud pits. We saw a few people there (as well as on the trail), but it was pretty much ours. Nearly everyone played in the mud a bit, with Mark and Julie showing everyone up on the big dirt hill (a lot of us tried and didn't make it). We all got muddy and had more than a few laughs. Ladd managed to get himself stuck on the far side of the biggest mud pit, and Kendall pulled him out with his new Samurai. Yes, the Samurai pulled out Ladd's Rubicon. We were all impressed with how well the Samurai did on its first run.
A few of us went out in Pine for pizza, and we were all a little sunburned and a lot tired on our first wheeling day of 2004 that didn't include snow and ice. This is always a great trail to break everyone in for the year. Good times!
