The Mud Loop is really obnoxious in the spring, with tons of puddles, slick mud, and nastiness ready to get in your brakes and help you break things. We thought we'd escape trail damage and most of the mud by doing the loop in September. We found a lot less mud but we couldn't seem to escape the damage.

We had a nice, big group when we met at Ted's Place. It was easier to meet there because everyone was coming from all different directions. We headed up the canyon and saw people camping at all of the available spots. It looked like it was going to be a great day, with perfect weather. We stopped to check out the parking area repairs at the Kelly Flats trailhead and aired down there, but then we moved on to Sevenmile Creek.

It was a nice, mellow drive for the most part. We saw hunters out scouting in UTVs, but no other vehicles. It meant we did the trail in record time with out much mud at all to slow us down. The only real differences in the dry trail were at creek crossings which were pretty shallow.

We stopped at the clearing, the first wide spot for six vehicles after a long trail through tight trees. We stretched our legs and chatted a bit, but we didn't stay long. We had some miles to burn.

The map we have on the website lets you see as much as possible before you leave the trail, but we cut one of the loops off to get to Bald Mountain a bit quicker. That meant a map consultation or two, but we got to Manhattan Road and the trailhead for Bald Mountain fairly quickly. We wondered if the rest of the Mud Loop would be as dry.

We did Kelly Flats and had some time to spare, so we decided to find Sevenmile Creek. We figured we’d start at the end, but we didn’t see the road. Coming back the other way, we found it and took it. We went in to the big intersection and turned…
