Red Cone
We had nice weather and a fantastic group as we got started on our way to Red Cone. We had some challenges finding places to air down, but once that was taken care of we headed up the trail. The initial rocks were fun, and everyone was in a fantastic mood.
We came around a corner just before the first real obstacle and saw a group of vehicles stopped ahead of us up the hill. We stopped to wait, and the wait kept getting longer. A couple people in our group went up to see what was happening, and the group in front of us was stopped behind another, big group of vehicles. Someone was stuck in the obstacle and having a tough time getting through it. There is no way to turn around there or get out of the way, so they had to keep going forward.
We got another group trapped behind us, and then they told us another group was trapped behind them. We were all on a narrow trail on the side of a steep hill, and there was nothing anyone could do. Everyone made the most of it, and we chatted with people with other groups while we waited. The weather was still nice, and it was just fine.
Once we started going again, everyone made it through the obstacle without any issues. The group having issues with it had found places to pull to the side, so we all went by. It had taken a while, so we pulled off at the first large, flat area for lunch to eat and watch the parade go by.
Unfortunately, that put us behind a lot of people, including the struggling group. So, Red Cone took us a very long time. But no one seemed to mind too much.
We had a great time in the rock obstacles, and even with some tire slippage and line changes we all made it through and had a blast.
When we got above timberline and up the big rock hill, there was a group in front of us stopped on the last, flat area before the top of the mountain. We stopped a bit farther down the hill, and no one was moving. So, we went up to ask about issues. They were waiting for the top of the mountain to clear out before they went up, because they wanted to hang out on top. As we waited, more groups piled up behind us.
The people on top took a long time before they left. When they finally did, everyone else went up, including us. We found parking, and the groups behind us either did the same or kept going. We didn't spend a ton of time at the top, but it was a great time.
The trip down to the intersection with Webster Pass was uneventful but fun. When we got to the intersection, we got out to discuss what we'd do next. We had lots of plans to do other trails, but Red Cone had taken so long that everyone decided we'd head back to town. So, we took half of Webster Pass back to where we started. It was an awesome day!
