Poughkeepsie Gulch
We had already completed four trails when we got to the upper end and trailhead for Poughkeepsie Gulch. We were running this trail downhill because we anticipated rain for a good share of the day, but the rain never materialized. In any case, we did not want to be winching our way up the obstacle in the rain so we altered our order of trails and we were finishing our long day with the biggest obstacle.
We started down the trail and headed for Como Lake. After a stop for some pictures, we headed on down the trail. The weather stayed pretty nice, and we enjoyed the numerous, rocky descents. There are many choices on the trail, but none really seemed to be better that any of the others. All of them presented a moderate challenge and you had to pay attention. Before we knew it we were at the obstacle.
When we were out of the Jeeps scoping out the obstacle, a side-by-side and an ATV came around us and worked their way down. After some studying we selected our line and headed down. Roger went down first with Walt spotting. Once on the obstacle, the driver can't see and must rely on their spotter. Once Roger inched his way down it was Walt's turn, but not before a couple more side-by-sides barged their way in front of Walt to go down first. Walt worked his way down with Roger spotting. Once we were both down we took a short break and then headed down the hill.
The descent was pretty much uneventful. It seemed as though the rocky trail heading down would never end. We called it "relentless" and it just kept going and going.
We finally reached the end of Poughkeepsie Gulch and took a short break before heading down Engineer Pass to Highway 550. It was yet another great day of wheeling.
