Mosquito Pass
Mosquito Pass was the first trail of the day. It looked like it was going to be a very nice day, but on the cool side. Matt had heard that a group of 4x4 drivers went up to the pass on the Sunday prior to dig out the last snow drift.
We aired down at the start of Mosquito Pass just off the paved road. The sign at the corner of the road said that Mosquito Pass was still closed, but we thought that we would go and find out for ourselves if the pass was open or closed. We started making our way up Mosquito Pass, and there were a few hikers on the trail.
At the start of the small but long hill climb, the trail was very rocky but none of us had any issues with the rocks. We stopped at the North London Mine for some pictures of the great view from there and the Jeeps on the trail. The shelf road did not give anyone any problems, but Brian and his wife stopped to pick up a small table that somebody had disposed of on the side of the trail.
Just before the snow drift, we ran into a group of four-wheel-drive vehicles that had just driven through the dug-out snow drift and were headed our way. It was a big enough area for all of us to pass each other.
Soon, we all went through the dug-out snow drift. It looked like it had been a lot of work to dig through! After the snow drift, there was only a short drive to the top of Mosquito Pass. It was very windy and cold at the top, so we did not stay that long.
As we went down the shelf road we ran into another group, two Jeeps making their way up to the top of Mosquito Pass. They found a small area to pull into so we could pass them. After the shelf road, we finished Mosquito Pass and drove to the start of Birdseye Gulch for lunch.
