Moody Hill
How has it been almost a decade since we were on Moody Hill? So many trails, and so little time. We aired down at the side of the road on the way there, so we were ready to go once we hit the trailhead. There were people getting ATVs and 4x4s ready all over the place there, so we got ahead of a large crowd. We went by the seasonal gate and headed uphill.
It's definitely a long, steep hill. There were ten vehicles in our group, so we ended up being pretty spread out. When we got to the overlook spur, we took it just to take a break and regroup. We barely fit in the turnaround at the top, but it was enough room. We were out for a while, just looking around a visiting. The weather was perfect.
We were soon heading uphill again, and we didn't end up seeing any traffic on the way up. Everything was green from all of the rain we'd had since the snow melted, and the big meadow looked like Windows wallpaper. At the top, we turned to go to the Rock Quarry.
We had the Quarry to ourselves at first, but then had a few spectators on dirt bikes. Everyone was happy and enjoying themselves. We all started at the bottom of the obstacle, though some people went around or took the middle path to the top instead of the obstacle.
Monica tried the Quarry in her old Jeep years ago and had lots of issues. This time, she popped right up. Go JK! Julie headed up behind her with her new tires, and she didn't have any issues at all. Matt showed us how it was done in his TJ, up and over in no time.
Frank's JK lost its rear locker the last time we were out, but it turned out to be unnecessary. Long wheelbases are very helpful on this obstacle. The rock was even whiter than his Jeep.
Dave was unsure about how his Jeep would do, but he followed the line we'd used all the way up the first part of the obstacle, having no problem at all. After some discussion, he decided to skip the second, top half of the obstacle. He cut out midway through.
Holly had new 37s and she wanted to check things out. She'd been chasing a rubbing noise all day, but when she drove up the first part of the obstacle she didn't hear it anymore. Not wanting to chance it, she skipped the top half of the Quarry, too.
It was noon, so we broke there for lunch. The boys had fun playing with RC Jeeps on the obstacle while we all enjoyed hanging out and talking. But soon we were off.
The rest of the trail was pretty mellow, and we were soon out on the road. We went into Crystal Mountain a little way, but it was still closed. That meant we'd have more time for new trails. Moody Hill is still a blast -- we missed the Quarry!
