Medano Pass
It was a beautiful, warm and sunny day. We had just come down from camping at Lake Como on the Blanca Peak trail, so our day had really started out well. We headed up Highway 150, topped off our fuel tanks, and then proceeded on to pay our way at the Great Sand Dunes park entrance. We soon started down the trail of sand.
We both enjoyed driving through the sand. It doesn't happen too often in Colorado. There were a few families and groups of people walking around, enjoying their day on the dunes.
We passed through many water crossings, all with a lot of water. We noted that the pass was closed earlier in the month due to high water levels from heavy rainfalls. It was fine when we went through them, though.
We stopped and took pictures of a group of Big Horn sheep that showed no fear of us being about 30 feet away. We continued into the forest and stopped to have lunch in a valley of aspens where an old log cabin once stood.
We went down the rest of the trail and never had to use 4-wheel drive, but it was a fun and pleasantly relaxing trail after doing Blanca Peak. We aired up just before Highway 69 and headed for home after a fantastic weekend.
