Hidden Valley Road
It's hard to believe that it had been seven years since we'd seen Hidden Valley Road. We're lucky to hear from lots of people each year with trail statuses, and this trail probably receives the most attention. Sometimes it's a crazy, eroded trail filled with whoopdeedoos. Other times it's a mellow dirt road. Which one would we find?
This was the first Colorado trail run of 2014, and we started off with almost everyone lost on the way to the meeting place. We'd found a new gas station to meet at that ended up working better, but it was confusing to everyone at first. After a bumpy start we got going.
We stopped just before the pavement turned to dirt in order to air down, and it worked perfectly. We soon found ourselves on the trail, and it was nice and smooth. We crossed the bridge or went around it, and we were soon heading up the hill.
The whoopdeedoos were gone, unfortunately, replaced with an easy dirt road. Still, the scenery was nice and it was great to start our local wheeling season. With no obstacles, it wasn't long at all before we got to the end of the trail and Dakan Road.
That's where we saw a parade of vehicles going in both directions on Dakan Road. The leader of the uphill pack was a big truck towing a camper. He got out to ask us which way to go, and we did our best to help. The rig seemed to big to be out there, but he kept going. We'd see him a few more times before the day was up.
It was a good start, and we had intended to go to Rampart Range Road. Instead, we turned the wrong way due to lack of attention and headed out to the highway. We were lost all morning, it seemed.
