Hell’s Revenge
We just finished Fins & Things and we were ready for more slickrock. The first hill is a fun one, and we talked about all the craziness that used to happen on Dump Bump. You can barely see it anymore. Lake Michigan was dry, and we pointed out black marks on the rocks where OHVs had gone to get away from the water.
We stopped at the dinosaur tracks and overlook, happy to see signs there. It was pretty unbelievable that someone would cut one out of the rock like they could own it. We are always working to keep our trails nice, and it was evidence of the type of person who just doesn't care.
After that, the big slickrock climb was next. We saw some buggies coming down it, on their way from playing on the big obstacles. It would be pretty scary to see someone on their way down as you were heading up, but we didn't see anyone coming down when we were actually on it. It's such a fun hill!
After that, we weaved our way down off of the dome to the sand. This stretch of Hell's Revenge is such a fun one, but we were looking forward to the rest of the trail so we pressed on.
We drove out to the overlook and many people joined us there. We took in the sights and then walked around the top of Hell's Gate. There was a wrecked vehicle at the top of the entrance, and we imagined that it fell down Hell's Gate and then someone dragged it to the top, out the entrance instead. We hoped that everyone in it survived, and we were happy to see that thieves had left it intact. After that, the group of us and our new friends all decided to skip Hell's Gate this time. We went back to the main trail.
The climb up the dome and around the Black Hole is always intimidating, but in a fun way. It seemed like a quick trip up to the Bath Tub, and almost all of our group went through it without any issues. No one tried the Car Wash, and we didn't stay long at Mickey's Hot Tub just checking it out. We couldn't imagine ever getting in that obstacle. Whale's Tail was a fun descent, and then we were down off of the big dome.
No one tried the Escalator, though a few of us walked it. The sun was going behind the hills and it was getting pretty chilly, so we went over to the Tip-Over Challenge. We worked on finding the right line, and then everyone went right up it without needing the bypass.
The rest of the trail seems to change each time we see it, and we missed Rubble Trouble. We saw that old trail, permanently closed. Someone was walking their dog on it, and we talked about possibly walking it someday to see it again. There were ledges and rocky sections on the way out, keeping it fun all the way to the end.
A classic day for Moab trails, and we were still grinning as we headed back into town.
