Guanella Pass
Guanella Pass used to be a fun little trail, but they have paved quite a bit of it. So this one is a "gimme" -- an easy way to rack up your trail count. We were aired up already, which made the potholes even worse. It really isn't a "trail" anymore.
We had done the southern section on the way to Geneva Creek while the sun was still up, but now it was almost completely down. It set as we drove, and we saw the mountains around us at the overlook by moonlight. We didn't see any cars coming the other way after that point.
There are portable traffic lights in two sections where they have the road down to one lane. They're doing some construction to put up retainer walls and fix drainage pipes under parts of the road. We waited for about five minutes at the first one as it was red, but it wasn't changing. We hadn't seen anyone else since we first got on the trail at Geneva Creek, so there probably wasn't anyone else coming. We carefully crept around to the other light, and no one was there.
We saw a few deer, and then a couple more in the town of Georgetown, right at the trailhead. We drove through town and went to the Visitor Center to figure out what everyone was doing. Some people went home, while others went to Idaho Springs for pizza at Beau Jo's. It was a great day, seeing snow before the aspen leaves have started changing. Colorado weather can be weird.
