The Georgetown Ice Races started early this year -- we're not usually on the ice until January. It was a Fun Day, so there weren't any official races but you got to drive around the tracks all day for $5. It was really windy but not too cold, and we had a blast.

We got there on time at 10:00AM but they weren't set up yet, so at noon we decided to break for lunch. The same thing happened last year so we'll probably start planning for a 1:00PM start time from now on. Lunch was good, and it was a little after 1:00PM when we started racing.

They set up three tracks, all in the dog bone shape. The Jeeps with the studded tires were racing around one of the tracks more than the others, so that meant there was one track that had roughed-up ice so you could drive a bit faster on it. The other two tracks stayed as smooth as glass and people were spinning and sliding all over the place. We played on all three tracks.

Everyone had a chance to win a race or two. Eric and Gary raced against each other a lot, and Bob and Monica saw a few races. Kris spent some time behind the wheel of Bob's Jeep, and she won too. Gary's grandson Josh had a fun time sliding on the ice, but he won't be old enough to drive a race until next year. It was nice winning a few for a change!

After a little over two hours the sun was starting to disappear and it was getting colder. We decided to head out, and on the way home we planned on seeing how far the frontage road would get us toward town. We managed to get all the way to the exit east of Idaho Springs before it ended on us. We'll be taking this to avoid the ski traffic.

The Fun Days are always a blast, and we're looking forward to the other one in February. The first one always means ice that's like wet glass, and the last one always means deep ruts and snow, so the two days are always completely different. We love the ice races, and we had a great time.

It was overcast and cold in Denver, and the roads were icy. We were expecting a nasty day, but as soon as we gained a bit of elevation on I-70 we popped above the fog to find blue skies. It was a gorgeous day, and one of the best days…
