This was a "Fun Day" and it really lived up to its name. For $5 we got to race over and over for hours against anyone we wanted and on a selection of all different tracks. Everyone out there was just having fun and no one took it too seriously, which made it a really great day on the ice.

Bob got there at about 10:30, Monica showed up at about 12:30, and Julie finally made it after 1:00. It was nice to not have to get up so early to get to the Ice Races. Bob was so early, in fact, that he ended up helping to set up the tracks. He was the first one on one of them, even.

There was a big Subaru competition race on the far track first, but when they were done that track was opened up to everyone. It made for a lot of Subarus who stayed after their race to join the rest of us while we drove around. There were some great racers in that bunch!

There were two dog bone tracks and one oval track. One of the dog bone tracks was very torn up from the competition studded tires so it was covered in "snow" that made it very fast with better traction. The oval was slick and made it fun to slide around the corners.

Monica was racing on a third dog bone track (closed later in the early afternoon) and was racing too fast after coming off of the slick oval track. She ended up completely backwards right before the finish line, putting it into reverse to back through the finish instead (she had already lost pretty badly to a Subaru). She backed over a cone and it ended up really wedged under her Jeep. It took a couple of helpful guys about five minutes of pushing and shoving to get it unstuck and out.

Bob's wife, Chris, was driving Bob's Jeep in some of the races. Hopefully she'll get to take the Jeep on some actual Ice Races next year! Then she got to ride along as a passenger in Wild Fire with Cathy. She went on a few races and had a blast.

Julie raced perfectly as usual, then parked her Jeep to actually drive Half Fast, a competition stud rig. She ended up drivi
ng it around the tracks for the rest of the afternoon, having a really great time.

Bob and Monica left at about 3:30 and Julie came down the mountain about an hour later. It was a great Fun Day at Georgetown, as usual!

January 9, 2015

Led by Monica I.
It was overcast and cold in Denver, and the roads were icy. We were expecting a nasty day, but as soon as we gained a bit of elevation on I-70 we popped above the fog to find blue skies. It was a gorgeous day, and one of the best days…
