Georgetown Ice Races
The sky was blue, it wasn't too cold, and we had a great time at the practice day for the Ice Races. It was our first run of 2005 and we were all happy to see each other. The ice was probably covered about 50% with a tiny bit of snow, but the rest was bare, slippery ice. It was hard to drive on, but we all had a blast slipping and sliding our way around the lake.
It started a couple of hours late, so by the time the cones were set up and ready to go we were all excited to get started. They set up a dog bone track as well as the oval track and we all kept moving back and forth between them. The oval track was fun because you can go faster with fewer turns, but we needed to practice on the dog bone track because it is the one they use for the Street Stock class we were all in.
It was the first time on the ice for Bob, Jed and Ladd. Monica and Eric had raced before (though Monica was in her Grand Cherokee this time and it did much better). Gary and Betty even stopped by but they didn't bring their Jeep this time. Everyone got to race against each other and other cars, including Audis, Subarus, and the rigs from the cheater and studs classes. That kept it interesting!
Though the slick ice made the racing especially difficult, it made it really fun to do a long slide sideways across the ice after finishing a race. That was one of the most fun parts of the day, sliding sideways while everyone watched the snow blow over the top of your car.
Because we got a late start we took a break after a lap or two and went to lunch in Georgetown. Then we headed back and raced more. Ladd and Monica raced one of the last laps on the oval track before they called it a day at about 5:00PM (a very late day for the Ice Races).
This should be good preparation for the real Ice Races, though the ice was really slick. If it snows it's going to be completely different, and that keeps it fun.
