Georgetown Ice Races
There were quite a few vehicles present at the races again, especially in the men's classes. The weather was pretty good, but clouded over, so it didn't ever warm up as much as the previous race weekend. Jane was there early to register for the Women's Street Stock Bare Rubber class, and already in line for her second practice run when Bob and Aaron arrived. Bob registered quickly and moved into line to begin his practice runs as well. Aaron's Jeep was in the shop this weekend, so he rode with Bob.
The track was set up slightly different from the week before. There were 4 additional cones to increase the difficulties on sections that were simply straight-aways on the previous race weekend. This added to the number of tight turns, and slowed down the already lethargic pace of the bare rubber races.
The bare rubber classes raced on the main track; the competition studded vehicles raced on a track further off to the East. Neither track was in the same location as the previous race weekend, giving us all-new ice to work with. The main track was not as torn up from previous days' races like the last race weekend, so traction was difficult to find.
The Women's Street Stock Bare Rubber division went first, with Jane racing with the number 29. Bob worked this race, helping with staging. There were 7 competitors in this race, with a variety of vehicles, including a 4Runner, which eventually took 1st place. Jane did very well, holding to her lines without too much sliding, and following the track like a pro. She performed well in her heats, but didn't end up winning. She walked away with 4th place, though, which was very cool. Congratulations, Jane!
Bob was up next with the Men's Street Stock Bare Rubber division. Jane was flagging for the corners on the left side of the track. It started snowing around this time, with some very strong gusts of wind. Poor Jane had to stand out there in the blowing snow during the entire Men's race, of which there were approximately 20 particip
ants. Bob didn't do so well today; he did an almost repeat performance of the previous race weekend. He never spun out badly, but simply went slow enough to maintain control of his steering. It ended up a close finish between him and the Ford Explorer he was racing, but the Explorer managed to cross just before Bob, despite Bob's valiant sideways effort (which ultimately caused him to knock over a cone at the finish, just like the weekend before).
After the Men's race was finished, we all decided to go down to Idaho Springs and eat at Beau Jo's. It was a lot of fun, and we're excited to be planning another trip soon.
