Fins & Things
A trip to Moab isn't complete without playing on the roller coaster that is the Fins & Things trail. This was the first time on slickrock for a few members so we headed off to the Sand Flats Recreation Area, paid our fee and headed up to play.
The first thing in the park is the entrance to Hell's Revenge. We'd be coming back to play on that one later so we continued on. Next is Baby Lion's Back, which is a great introduction to the ups and downs of playing on fins. Everyone was grinning after making it down the steep but short practice fin.
We drove further into the park and were at the trailhead for Fins & Things very quickly. It's nice how close this trail is to town. We were already aired down and disconnected, so we started up the trail.
The start of it is fun from the beginning and it continued with fun all the way through. We played for awhile on the first big hill, going up and down it multiple times. Then we headed off to go down even steeper hills. Steve was scooping up sand all over the place with his winch (The Scoop).
We hit the confusing area and managed to completely skip the tippy area (we followed the "access" signs by mistake). We turned around and found the right trail, getting tippy around the corner.
It was about lunch time when we passed the spray-painted rocks marking the Overlook, so we drove the short distance to eat lunch in scenery. It was a little hot out (not too bad) so we all formed the most crowded picnic ever in the shade of Monica's Jeep. We ate fairly quickly so we could continue the trail.
When we came to the optional Kenny's Climb where you can go up the side or around to the right, everyone took Kenny's Climb. Everyone enjoyed it!
The best part is always Frenchy's Fin, and it didn't let us down. Everyone looked pretty serious on the climb up the steep hill, but then it was all grins at the top of it. That started all of the trips up steep fins and down the other side of steep fins, as well as playing in sand in between them.
We didn't really run into anyone on the trail so we completed it very quickly. That last big, steep fin climb was a blast, as were the other fins at the end that are so long and steep. We were out pretty quickly and on our way to Hell's Revenge.
We had great weather and a great time -- as always!
