Devil’s Canyon
We weren't going to get very far from Denver for the entire day, and that's always a good time. It gives us time to hang out more, and ending the day with a relatively short drive home is always a bonus. We also got to meet and add three new members at once, which was pretty awesome. We met at the McDonald's in Idaho Springs, and it seemed like it's getting too busy to continue to be a good meeting place for us. It was nice while it lasted, but it was a madhouse.
Everyone showed up on time, and we welcomed Jay, Sean, and Ken to the group. We pulled out of McDonald's and immediately got separated in the confusion of all of the cars there. Most of us headed into town and lost others who took the highway instead. We hoped to reconnect at the trailhead, and that's exactly what happened. We'd continue to have communication issues throughout the day, but it always worked out.
We aired down at a wide shoulder on the highway because there is no real place to air down at the Devil's Canyon trailhead. Roger's Jeep was smoking for a little bit, but then it stopped and there didn't seem to be any damage, so he decided to continue to the trails. He didn't have any other issues. When we got to the trailhead we headed right up the trail.
The car we passed at the start was the only vehicle we'd see on the trail. For the Saturday after the 4th of July, there weren't many people out.
The beginning of the trail was uneventful. When we got to the spur, we decided to map it so we all headed in. Jay got separated from the group and we ended up losing him until we got back to the main trail. More communication issues to add to our day.
After we reconnected with Jay, we stopped at the high point to stretch our legs and take in the scenery. The skies were blue and everything was green. We noticed that there weren't many dead trees, which was a nice change from what we've been seeing around the state lately.
The hill descent was a fun one, and Matt and Jay ran up it to do it in both directions as soon as we got to the bottom. It's definitely a fun time.
When we got to the spur, we decided to map it so we all headed in. Jay got separated from the group and we ended up losing him until we got back to the main trail. More communication issues to add to our day.
The big loop was really nice, with awesome scenery and perfect weather. We popped up onto Devil's Hill, but we didn't stop or play on any spurs.
We thought about doing the spur that heads west at the low point of the trail, but it looked over grown and we wanted to get to more trails. We might do it some other day.
It wasn't noon yet by the time we got back to the trailhead and headed to our next trail.
