On the way up Middle St. Vrain we hoped that the hill at the end of Coney Flats wasn't too slick and snowy. We'd done it that way before and it was a little dicey in spots. When we got to the end of the trail we looked up the hill and we were happy to see it was dry and clear. We went to the end of Middle St. Vrain first and then came back to Coney Flats.

The hill between Middle St. Vrain and the Coney Flats lake has always been a fun one, and each year it gets more fun when it gets more eroded and chewed up. Middle St. Vrain had changed a lot but it seemed like the hill on Coney Flats was very close to how it always was, at least until we got to the rocks at the top.

Those rocks have always been challenging. This year they were even better. Monica got stuck a couple of times but got through on her own power. No one else had any issues. Everyone else had lots of smiles.

A couple of dirt bikes passed us there, headed in the other direction. Other than that we saw a couple vehicles at the lake. It was pretty quiet for a Saturday.

When we got to the lake everyone took turns posing on the big rock there. It was really windy so we made a block with the vehicles and huddled on the other side for lunch. We ate a fairly quick lunch because most of us were excited to get in the water.

Everyone went through three times -- all the way to the other side, then back for photos, then back again to continue the trail. Matt made a weird wave that went over the side of his Jeep, and both Ryan and Austin got some great splashes. We always have such a good time at the lake.

But the weather wasn't great so we didn't hang out as long as we usually do in warmer weather. The trail on the way down was a bit rougher than we remembered but it wasn't too bad at all.

In one spot it looked like the trail split. We went left when we should have gone right and that meant getting us all turned around in a campsite. We eventually got back on the correct trail and all was well.

We aired up in many different spots and it was only 3PM! That never happens with this group and it was pretty weird. Still, everyone was fine with heading home earlier than usual instead of doing another trail.

A few of us went out for Burgers in Broomfield but almost everyone else went their separate ways after the trail. For most of us this will be the last true run of the season and it was a great way to wrap things up. Until next year!

Led by Matt K.
Coney Flats was the last trail for the day, right after the fun of Middle St. Vrain. The first part of the trail had some rocky spots and was no issue for us. About halfway to the lake, we came to a big rock pile area. Matt went the hard…
