Owl Ridge
We were wrapping up a long day on the trails around Teller City, soggy from the rain and a bit chilled. We were on Highway 125 and we knew we had a long way to go, through Walden and all the way back around to our campground at Ranger Lakes. It almost seemed like a good idea to take Teller City and Michigan River all the way back, an almost direct route from where we were. But we saw a sign pointing to the town of Gould so we made the turn.
It ended up being a fantastic way to connect the two highways, exactly where we needed to go. And it wasn't just a farm road -- it was really scenic. Owl Mountain stretched out across our field of view, and you could see for miles to either side. It was an easy road and we passed cars going the other way, but it was still awesome.
At one point, we stopped in the road to stare at a red-tailed hawk perched on a fence post next to the road. It was probably a pain in the wing to fly in the rain. He took a short break and then flew off, so we kept going.
There was a pullout on the ridge where we stopped to check things out. It was a bummer that it was so rainy and cloudy. We'd have to take the road again when it was nice, so we could see the sights.
When we got to the end in Gould, it was a quick trip to our campground. And it wasn't raining anymore! We relaxed at the site for our last night there with plenty of time to enjoy the last of the light. This ended up being a great trip.
